Got to love when you're singles come in. I love when I'm sitting at a sports book and someone says I refuse to bet that horse you're only going to get back $4.20 or in this case $5 for every $2 to win on the horse. Then that same man proceeds to take a sports game for odds of -110. Last I checked 8/5 is actually 1.6 to 1. So a man who swears that he would never risk his money betting on a 8/5 shot just bet the equivalent of less than an even money shot.
Sometimes people's logic leaves me flabbergasted, I should say there lack of knowledge. Not even knowledge so to say it's almost as if the saying "common sense" needs to be changed in the English language. There seems to be nothing especially over the last 5 years and some travels around the wonderful United States of America, that makes me think there is anything common about people having sense these days and ages. I know I sound like an old man bitching but there is no longer anything common about finding people with common sense. I feel as though everyone has become so reliant on this instant gratification society that we've turned into, that when the tiniest thing is out of place no one can think. It's almost like everyone is on auto pilot and god forbid they must use their heads.
The reason I went on that tangent is because this person I mentioned above didn't even think about betting in those terms. He honestly didn't realize that he just said he would never place any money at 8/5 odds he doesn't care. Now if we're strictly talking horses I understand, I know a lot of people who only bet if their horse is 4to1 or higher. On the contrary I know a lot of professional handicappers that are Bridge Jumpers for a living. Meaning that they look at races as a way to make .10cents on their dollar. They wait for a huge favorite that can't lose so to speak or whatever parameters they use to distinguish their plays and they bet 200k to show on a horse at 1to9 odds. In horse racing they have to pay you out at least 2.20 ao no matter how much money is bet on the huge favorite they know if that horse finishes in the top 3 that they will get back $2.20 x $100, 000 = $220, 000, so they make $20k if the huge favorite just finishes in the top three. There can be only 5 horses in the race and the payoff is the same as if there are 20 horses- 1 to 9 is 1 to 9.
So as he sat back down I asked him "so is that strictly a rule that you won't bet 8/5 or less on anything? " This is after he just $11, 000 to win $10, 000 on a NFL PRESEASON GAME.
His response- "yep that's why I like sports and bet on sports for a living because you had to beat all the other horses in the race and got lucky that you did because your horse had a horrible start and was lucky that the race fell apart and he was able to win." At this point I was going to kindly still take the high road and inform him nicely that he was mistaken.... But he had to follow it up with this peach of a line-
"Trust me kid stick with me and I will show you how it's done it's easy!!!"
That's when being extremely nice and understanding like I always am knowing that lots of people I would say 90% that bet truly don't really understand how a sportsbook is operated. But the whole KID thing got to me and even more annoying to me is this idiot claiming to be a professional in the same field as me giving all of us who are true pros a bad name.
So I informed him of his error in common sense. I asked "what odds did you get on your football game" he preceded with of course "2 to 1 I bet 11k and collect 21k I told you kid thats the way to go forget your 8 to 5 shots."
My response was the following:
"First off I'm not a fucking kid get that straight from the get go. I hate to break it to you but if you got 2 to 1 then what is +200 in sports mean isn't that 2 to 1. That's right you're not even smart enough to realize as you're stroking your own ego and think that your going to teach me something in two things I know more about than anything else and have worked for and studied sports and horse racing betting for 25yrs now even though I'm just 31 that your argument and reasoning goes totally out the window since you don't even know what you're betting to begin with. "
"You just bet at -110 if it was 2 to 1 your ticket would be 10k to win 20k total return 30k. Do you understand know KID"
PEOPLE DON'T LET YOUR EGO'S EVER GET IN THE WAY OF YOUR BETTER SENSE OF JUDGMENT.
